Week 3: Quick Picks

As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, we’re not the gambling type here at NFL Logue, so we don’t usually put money on individual games. Still, we do believe that if one is going to write about the comings and goings of the NFL on a weekly basis, one should be bold enough to declare one’s picks to win every week.

If there’s one thing that we learned from Jerry Maguire, it’s that there’s only one way to get famous: Hang your balls out. And it’s with that in mind, that we offer our quick picks for Week 3.

Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh
Cincy’s defense is banged up, and Pittsburgh is coming off a tough MNF loss to Jacksonville. Pittsburgh has the home field in this one, but we’re going with the Bengals, whose improved defense will make life tough on the out-of-sync Steelers offense.

Green Bay vs. Detroit
Green Bay showed last week that, when Brett Favre is on, they can still score points. Problem is, though, they have one of the worst defenses in league (although DE Aaron Kampman has gotten off to a great start). Look for Detroit to dominate the line of scrimmage in this one on both sides of the ball, and for Jon Kitna to exploit Green Bay’s secondary.

Tennessee vs. Miami
We qoute David Spade from the epic 90’s movie “PCU”: Doesn’t matter who wins, ’cause they’re all losers. Tennessee has been awful through two weeks, and Miami has disappointed all those jokers that had them as the chic AFC Super Bowl pick. Games like this come down to talent. Miami has it, Tennessee does not.

Washington vs. Houston
Washington is the perenniel cock-tease of the NFL. Every offseason, they overpay for free agents and the pundits pick them to make the playoffs. Every year –ok, so not last year, but every other year– they come up short. At 0-2, this team desperately needs a W, and they need Clinton Portis to come back and have a big game. Enter the Houston Texans. Anytime you need a big win, head to Houston. In spite of ourselves, we like the Skins in this one.

Baltimore vs. Cleveland
Baltimore is going to come out to and bitch-slap Cleveland, just like they did with Tampa and Oakland. This will set off a debate about whether or not the Ravens are really that good, or if they’re just benefiting from a weak schedule. You know what? Doesn’t mean a damn thing as long you keep on winning. Which they will, at least this week.

NYG vs. Seattle
Seattle hasn’t quite gotten it going yet, and it’s obvious that they miss Steve Hutchinson up front. New York is coming off a huge comeback win over Philly, but they’re not without their warts. Seattle’s pass rush could cause problems for an o line that gave up 8 sacks last week. Even though Seattle is a tough place to play, we like the Giants to squeak one out this week. That said, we’ll admit that our deep-seeded hatred for the ‘Hawks may be coloring our vision a little bit.

Philadelphia vs. San Francisco
Something tells us Philly’s going to come out a little bit salty after blowing a huge lead against the Giants last week. San Fran has shown huge improvement over last year, and we expect Frank Gore to have another big game. The Eagles are the better team, though, and we expect them to get a road win in this one. They just have too much for San Francisco’s defense.

St. Louis vs. Arizona
We’re not sure how this one’s going down, but we’d sure be taking the ‘over’ if we were the betting type. Neither team has looked real sharp thus far. Look for Arizona to win a barn burner in the Taco.

Denver vs. New England
Something’s definitely wrong in New England this year, but we’re not dumb enough to bet on Jake Plummer beating Tom Brady in Foxboro. New England avenges last season’s playoff loss in an ugly one.

Atlanta vs. New Orleans
The symbolic re-opening of the Superdome makes New Orleans the sentimental favorite, but one has to wonder whether the Saints have enough defense to stop Mike Vick, Warrick Dunn, and the best running game in the NFL. On paper, the Falcons win this one in a walk. But the game isn’t played in paper. The Saints win one for the for their fans.
