Jeff Fisher, Billy Volek, and A Bus

Billy Volek says the Titans threw him under a bus. Jeff Fisher says Billy Volek threw the Titans under a bus, that Volek is a big fat liar.

Now, we don’t know who did the throwing, and who actually ended up under the bus (we’re not talking about a real bus, right?), but we do know two things that rub us the wrong way about this whole situation.

First, we don’t trust people that give you the old “he lied to me….but I’m not gonna say what he lied about.” Oh? Call us moral relativists if you will, but we believe that all lies are not created equal. I mean, are we talking about a Volek giving Fisher a little white lie along the lines of “Oh, hell yeah, coach! Your pseudo-mullet is hellified. Keep that thing rockin’ for at least another year.” Or, are we talking about a “there’s WMD in Iraq” type lie? Because it makes a difference. If you ask us, Fisher is doing a little cover-yer-ass PR right now by calling out Volek, and we don’t like it one bit.

Second, from a personnel standpoint, we really don’t like the Titans decision to bench Volek, sign Kerry Collins, and ultimately trade Volek to the Chargers. Frankly, we think the Tennessee fans and media have every right to be pissed off about this whole thing. Is Kerry Collins really an improvement over Billy Volek, a guy who had actually, you know, produced positive results for the team in recent seasons? Was whatever Volek supposedly lied about bad enough to merit entrusting your QB position to a washed up has-been (no offense, Kerry), and a raw, untested –albeit talented– rookie?

In essence, the decision to part ways with Volek was a decision to cash in the season. It may turn out to have graver consequences than that if the Titans decide to throw Vince Young to the wolves this year, he inevitably struggles, it kills his confidence, and he goes on to hang out with the Akili Smiths and Kyle Bollers of the world.

Yeah, we don’t really know what went on here, but we gotta believe that the Titans organization didn’t do themselves any favors by shipping Billy Volek to San Diego. Or by throwing him under the bus.
