God Bless You, Drew Bledsoe

bledsoe.jpgAny Philadelphia Eagles fans will tell you that some of his best and worst memories has been watching games against the Dallas Cowboys. From Wilbert Montgomery running wild in the 1981 NFC Conference Championship game to Buddy Ryan’s Bounty Bowl to the countless times Dallas has drubbed the Eagles, the rivalry has been one of the best in the NFL.

Sunday’s game will take its rightful place in Philadelphia lore. The two teams slugged it out and both showed that they are more than capable. Sure, the pre-game hype was all about Terrell Owens making his return to the City of Brotherly Love, but this game didn’t turn out to be about a wide receiver. No, the difference this game was at the quarterback position.

On the one side of the field you had Drew Bledsoe. Is there a more experienced quarterback out there who makes worse decisions than him? Maybe Brett Farve on a bad day, but from what I have seen the past two seasons, Bledsoe has lost a lot of skill, as well as an equal number of brain cells. The dude simply holds onto the ball too long which leads to unnecessary sacks and a countless number of fumbles. He also throws some inexplicable passes and interceptions.

On the other side of the field you had Donovan McNabb. Is there a quarterback out there who has taken more unnecessary crap than him? The guy is far from perfect but he is a winner. His record speaks for itself. Today he made the big plays that needed to be made in the second half. He avoided the mistakes that Bledsoe made and as a result his team came away with its fourth victory in five games.

McNabb threw for 300 yards for the third game this season. His wide receivers? Hank Baskett, Reggie Brown and Greg Lewis. Can you imagine what he would throw for if he had Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn on his side?

Let’s be clear, neither Philadelphia nor Dallas is going to win the Super Bowl this season. But one thing is also certain, the Eagles will go a lot further than the Cowboys as long as McNabb stays healthy and Bledsoe continues to be Bledsoe, a washed up, mistake-prone liability.
